What to stand on to reach things on the top shelf (of life)

Recently in The Boardroom we were talking about generating ideas, and implementing ideas.

For this very reason, one of the things we do in The Boardroom every month is ship a book to each member.

And we do that because there's a philosophy out there, and I think Jim Rohn sums it up best:

"If you work hard on your job, you can make a living.
But if you work hard on yourself, you can make a fortune."

And the members of the boardroom realize that.

They're all focused on personal development just as much as they are on professional development.

But I want to make a distinction here.

Reading books (or however you consume information) is great. But it's not enough by itself.

Because when we read a book, the idea is to actually implement something.

And some people are like, "Well, I can't finish a book."

Look, just trying—having books around you, attempting to read, surrounding yourself with other people who read—that still encourages growth.

In fact, there's a member of The Boardroom that, candidly, doesn't even read the entire book each month.

They just read the book until they get ONE idea.

Just one idea that encourages or inspires them, and then they go implement that.

Implementing one idea from a book has way more impact than reading an entire book and doing nothing.

And I've seen the power of implementation in my own life...

Around 15 years ago I read a book, sent a note to the author, and told him something that I implemented.

And when he was doing an event, he actually invited me to speak on stage about what I had implemented from his book.

I can't even express the doors that opened for me.

Not only did I get to share in front of a room of my ideal referral partners and connect with them...

...but it was also the catalyst for eventually hosting and leading my own events for over a decade.

It wasn't because I had some special gift. It had nothing to do with being an expert in my core competency.

It was all because I had studied something and put it into practice.

One thing led to another, which led to another.

And all because I did one thing: Bought a book.

So looking back...

What would have happened if I hadn't bought that book?

What would have happened if I hadn't read it?

What would have happened if I hadn't implemented that one thing?

What would have happened if I hadn't taken a moment to write the author and let him know?

Probably nothing.

And nothing has a big cost.

So now...what are you possibly missing out on in your future by not doing the same?

My encouragement to you today is to go buy a book.

  • What's a book that's caught your eye?
  • What's the next problem that you need to solve?
  • What's the next passion you'd like to enhance?

Go buy that book, and promise yourself you'll read it until you find just one thing to implement.

Because another Jim Rohn quote I love is:

"If you want to reach the things on the top shelf of life, you've got to stand on the books you read."

So what are you going to read? Let me know!

Until next time,

Brian

Let's talk about flywheels, and what they can do for your business. There are four stages of a flywheel: It starts slowly. If you think about an industrial flywheel, it's a big wheel that moves a lot of things, and it takes some work to get it started from stopped. It builds momentum. Once it gets going, you may have to give it nudges here and there to keep it going, but it's decent good momentum. And it's way easier than starting from stopped, like at the beginning. It reinforces and...

One problem I know everyone's always looking to solve: Getting ideal clients to come their way as often as possible. So here's some quick inspiration I wanted to share from a coaching client. This client has built his own referral flywheel, centered around a monthly event. Let's back up a sec. First of all, he's got built-in systems for how he's connecting with people. He's reaching out on a monthly basis. Making calls, checking in on people. Just simply loving on people. That's all he's...

Every week I get together with about 13-15 small business owners in The Boardroom, where we share what's going on in our lives. We have spotlight sessions each time, which even when you're not in the spotlight, are SO illuminating. And it's interesting...this one time, both people in the spotlight both had the same problem: They felt stuck. And after having conversations with the rest of The Boardroom and bouncing some things around, BOTH of them came to the same exact conclusion: It wasn't...
