The Muhammad Ali lesson for business growth

Losing focus. You gotta watch out for when it's happening to you.

So here's a little "Coach's Corner" lesson for you...

I was meeting with a financial advisor client earlier this week.

He's a 10-year veteran in his industry, and very successful.

But he'd reached a threshold in his business where he felt stagnant.

So what we did was, we went back to the basics.

In my coaching practice, there's something called the 5 Elements of Momentum, or the Momentum System.

So we did was, we went back and reviewed those 5 Elements, to see where he had lost momentum.

And when we got to the "Plan" portion of the 5 Elements, we uncovered that the execution of his plan was off.

It was off for one reason: He lost focus.

It happens...even to legends, like Muhammad Ali.

In fact, he even has a whole quote about it—and no, it's not the one about bees and butterflies.

Muhammad Ali was a three-time world champion in boxing.

He was interviewed and asked, "Muhammad Ali, you've had an incredibly successful career...but you also lost the world title twice. What happened?"

And his answer was one we can all learn from. Trying to drive sales, trying to drive referrals, just trying to live your life...wherever.

But we'll get to that in a minute. First back to this financial advisor.

We found he had taken his eye off the ball on one key component he needed to drive his business:

Scheduling appointments.

That was it.

He just needed to focus on getting appointments scheduled.

Now, it may sound simple.

But that is the truth of the matter is, what drives our business IS the simple things.

Muhammad Ali knew that. Why did he lose the world title twice?

"It's the simple things."

Losing focus on the basics.

So we got him refocused, with new energy and new targets. (The financial advisor, obviously...not Muhammad Al.)

And now he's about 2-3 "12-week years" (i.e. quarters) away from having his business at a level that'll give him more freedom than he's ever had in his career.

So my advice to you: "What you measure, gets managed." And measuring is exactly what keeps you focused. Having targets, and hitting them.

Stay focused on that.

And to keep from losing focus? Surround yourself with people who'll hold you capable of achieving your targets, and amazing things will happen.

By the way, this person happens to be a member of The Boardroom. And without it—without checks and balances—you can see the danger of continuing down the road unfocused...forever.

So if you're feeling stagnant...

...if you feel like you could use some help...

...if you want to surround yourself with people who will lift you up...

...feel free to respond to this email and let's talk.

Appreciate you,

Brian

Let's talk about flywheels, and what they can do for your business. There are four stages of a flywheel: It starts slowly. If you think about an industrial flywheel, it's a big wheel that moves a lot of things, and it takes some work to get it started from stopped. It builds momentum. Once it gets going, you may have to give it nudges here and there to keep it going, but it's decent good momentum. And it's way easier than starting from stopped, like at the beginning. It reinforces and...

One problem I know everyone's always looking to solve: Getting ideal clients to come their way as often as possible. So here's some quick inspiration I wanted to share from a coaching client. This client has built his own referral flywheel, centered around a monthly event. Let's back up a sec. First of all, he's got built-in systems for how he's connecting with people. He's reaching out on a monthly basis. Making calls, checking in on people. Just simply loving on people. That's all he's...

Every week I get together with about 13-15 small business owners in The Boardroom, where we share what's going on in our lives. We have spotlight sessions each time, which even when you're not in the spotlight, are SO illuminating. And it's interesting...this one time, both people in the spotlight both had the same problem: They felt stuck. And after having conversations with the rest of The Boardroom and bouncing some things around, BOTH of them came to the same exact conclusion: It wasn't...
