Hey Reader, last week I shared a short and simple social media post about effort counting twice. It struck a chord with a few people, so digging a little deeper on that today. I have a client who has about 10 years in her industry. She has a pretty successful practice, but is trying to build an even bigger, better business. (Can you relate?) She's doing this through relationships and strategic partnerships. But recently, she was feeling like she couldn't make it happen. That she wouldn't be able create the amount of relationships needed to grow her business to the level she wanted. She said to me, "Brian, I don't know if I can do this. I don't know if I'm a right fit for this career." (Impostor syndrome strikes again.) Keep in mind, this is already an incredibly successful professional. So that impostor syndrome happens to all of us. But the thing is, it's a lie your brain tells you, so you'll stop putting in the effort. And effort is the key to everything. To drive this home, I shared Angela Duckworth's concept from her book Grit. It's not IQ that makes someone successful. It's not even talent. It's effort. In Grit, Angela shares a very simple formula. Talent x Effort = Skill (Hear that? Talent ≠ Skill. You have to put in effort to get there.) Then, when you take that same skill you've cultivated and multiply that by effort once again, that's where achievement happens. Skill x Effort = Achievement Do you see it? Effort. counts. twice. That's how you get from Doubt, all the way over to Achievement. Through Effort. That's how you bridge the gap. And unless you're depending on luck, only through effort. So. Take a look at what you're trying to build. Where do you need to put in the effort... Effort may take a lot of work, but it counts twice. Also, remember: In most cases, results don't immediately follow the effort you put in. And... ...
Small habits don't add up, they compound. You don't need to be twice as good to get twice the results. You just need to be slightly better. - James Clear
So keep going. And focus on enjoying the doing to keep that doubt away. Brian Whenever you're ready, there are 2 ways I can help you:

I was working with another coaching client recently on transforming his referral partnerships. He was burnt out by years of asking, nagging, and 'bragging' for referrals. The awkwardness of it all for the seemingly low return. So he was looking to rekindle his confidence in approaching people...confidence that got lost along the way because he felt too focused on himself, but didn't know or understand how to focus on the other person. (Sound familiar? You're the one asking for referrals,...
Losing focus. You gotta watch out for when it's happening to you. So here's a little "Coach's Corner" lesson for you... I was meeting with a financial advisor client earlier this week. He's a 10-year veteran in his industry, and very successful. But he'd reached a threshold in his business where he felt stagnant. So what we did was, we went back to the basics. In my coaching practice, there's something called the 5 Elements of Momentum, or the Momentum System. So we did was, we went back and...
Recently in The Boardroom we were talking about generating ideas, and implementing ideas. For this very reason, one of the things we do in The Boardroom every month is ship a book to each member. And we do that because there's a philosophy out there, and I think Jim Rohn sums it up best: "If you work hard on your job, you can make a living. But if you work hard on yourself, you can make a fortune." And the members of the boardroom realize that. They're all focused on personal development just...
