How Successful Givers Create Reciprocity

Hello, relational leaders.

Thank you so much for being here.

As a small business owner or commission sales professional, you probably have a servant leader's heart. You love helping others. You love adding value. And I appreciate that about you.

Last week we talked about the first trait of a successful giver, which is knowing where you are going. Many of you reached out for the Vision Story, and I hope you found that helpful.

Today we are moving to the second trait.

Successful givers have an amazing group of connections.

They are incredibly connected. But more importantly, they are excellent at connecting others. They make thoughtful introductions. They look for opportunities to bring people together. They are constantly helping other leaders meet the right person at the right time.

And here is the real secret behind it.

They have mastered the art of giving referrals in the same way they would like to receive them.

They generously share connections because they want to be connected. They make introductions because they enjoy receiving introductions. They offer referrals because they appreciate it when others refer them.

They model the exact behavior they hope will come back their way.

This is what creates healthy reciprocity.

Successful givers look for proactive ways to support other influential relationships. They pay attention to their shoulder industries. They look for industry icons. They consider the people they want to build influence with and ask, how can I create a positive impact for them.

That mindset is what makes their connections so strong.

So here is the encouragement for this week.

Trait number two on the list of successful givers is having great connections.

Build up your relational network. Identify trusted advisors your ideal clients often need. Look for people you can introduce, boost, connect, and refer.

When you do that consistently, you will see your influence grow in meaningful and lasting ways.

Stick around because over the next couple of weeks we will walk through traits three and four. Both are powerful, and both will strengthen your referral-based business.

Hope you found this useful. And if there is anything I can do to support you, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Thanks so much,
Brian

For years, I believed that if I simply did great work, referrals would naturally follow. But here’s what I eventually learned: Referrals aren’t built on competence alone. They’re built on confidence. People refer the professionals they trust will make them look like a hero—not necessarily the ones with the deepest technical skills. If you want consistent referrals, ask yourself these three questions: 1. What story do people tell about working with me? If your value isn’t clear and easy to...
